Using satellite rainfall products to assess the triggering conditions for hydro-morphological processes in different geomorphological settings in China

Hydro-morphological processes (HMP, i.e. all contained within the spectrum defined between debris flows and flash floods) initiate in response to intense rainfall events. Efficient HMP hazard assessment over large regions is often hindered because of limited observations mountainous areas. Real-time easily accessible satellite products offer new opportunities address observational coverage problem ungauged catchments. In this work, two products, Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Climate Hazards Group Infrared with Station Data (CHIRPS), are investigated by taking ground measurements as a reference. Based on close agreement GPM rain gauge data, daily together series antecedent values were calculated investigate spatio-temporal distribution occurred from 2001 2015 across whole Chinese territory. Ultimately, thresholds for initiation different geomorphological settings China obtained by: (1) building sequences consisting non-HMP via 100 nonparametric bootstrapped replicates; (2) testing several percentiles occurrence; (3) optimizing six macro-regions China. This study confirmed ability data defining conditions triggering HMP, acknowledging potential underestimation and/or bias that characterize any products. Our findings provides insight responsible at national scale.
